Water: A Vital Resource. On World Water Day, we must come together to face a harsh reality: water scarcity is a global crisis that affects us all.
After five consecutive years of severe drought, Andalusia is experiencing a critical water shortage. With reservoir levels down to just 20% capacity, many municipalities are struggling with supply issues. The situation demands immediate attention and action.
Without a radical shift and at least 30 consecutive days of rainfall, the crisis will worsen. Action is urgent. Your help counts. Below are practical ways to reduce water waste—both at home and as marina users.
From home, each of us can make a meaningful impact:
Leak Repair
A small drip can waste large volumes of water over time. Regularly inspect faucets, pipes, and irrigation systems, and fix leaks promptly.
Optimize watering
Use efficient methods like drip irrigation or schedule automatic systems to avoid unnecessary watering.
Reduce Household Consumption
Install low-flow devices on faucets and showers to cut down on daily water use.
Garden saving practices
Choose native plants that require less water. Use mulch to retain soil moisture and water your garden early in the morning or late at night to reduce evaporation.
Community Engagement, Education and Awareness
Educating the public is key. Organize talks, workshops, and awareness campaigns to promote responsible water use and conservation habits.
Water-Saving Measures at the Marina
Marina users also play a role in reducing water consumption.
Leak Control on Boats
Just like at home, maintaining boats to prevent leaks is essential. Regularly inspect onboard water systems and connections.
Optimize Water Use During Cleaning
Since September 2022, the use of pressure water diffuser guns for boat cleaning is mandatory at Puerto Banús. Non-compliance results in a surcharge on the water supply bill, applied at the end of the stay or monthly billing cycle. Pressure diffuser guns are available for purchase at the Mariner’s Office.
Reuse and Recycling
Puerto Banús supports wastewater management for boats over 12 meters long, helping protect the marine environment and reduce pollution.
Individual and collective action is vital in the fight against drought in Andalusia. Every drop counts. It is everyone’s responsibility to protect this precious resource. Together, we can meet this challenge and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
