How to tackle the drought in Andalusia?

Water is a vital resource for life. On World Water Day, we must come together to address the harsh reality: water scarcity is a global crisis that affects us all.

After enduring 5 years of severe drought, Andalusia is facing a worrying water shortage. With just 20% capacity in our reservoirs, severe drought is hitting our community hard, leaving numerous municipalities with supply problems. The situation is critical and requires immediate action.

The crisis will worsen without a radical change and at least 30 consecutive days of rain. Action is urgent. Your help counts. Below are ways, both from home and as marina users, to avoid water wastage.

From home, each of us can contribute significantly to water conservation. Here are some simple yet effective measures we can all take:

Leak Repair

A small drip can waste large amounts of water over time. Regularly check faucets, pipes, and irrigation systems for leaks and repair them as soon as possible.

Optimize watering

Use efficient watering techniques such as drip irrigation or scheduling automatic irrigation systems to avoid water waste.

Reduce household consumption

Install low-flow devices on faucets and showers to reduce water consumption.

Garden saving practices

Choose native plants that require less water and use mulch to retain moisture in the soil. Also, water the garden early in the morning or late at night to minimize evaporation.

How to tackle the drought in Andalusia?

Education and Awareness

Educating the community about the importance of water and measures for its conservation is essential. Organise talks, workshops, or awareness campaigns to promote responsible habits.

On the other hand, marina users can also take steps to reduce their impact on water consumption:

Leak control on boats

Like at home, it is crucial to keep boats in good condition to prevent water leaks. Regularly inspect connections and water systems on board and make necessary repairs.

Optimize water use on the boat

Intending to reduce and optimize water consumption in boat cleaning, since September 2022, the use of pressure water diffuser guns for this activity is mandatory in Puerto Banús.

Those users who do not comply with this measure will be penalized, through a surcharge on the supply consumption bill at the end of their stay, or at the end-of-month cut-off date. In case of not having a pressure water diffuser gun, users can purchase one at our Mariner’s office.

Reuse and recycling

At Puerto Banús, we are concerned with caring for and protecting the marine environment. That is why we facilitate the management of wastewater for boats over 12 meters long.

Taking individual and collective actions can make a difference in the fight against drought in Andalusia. Every drop counts and it is everyone’s responsibility to contribute to its preservation. Together, we can face this challenge and ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
