Honorary Stroke at Puerto Banús to inaugurate the Spanish Women’s Open

Did you know that in Spain there are nearly 4 million sports licences and only 23.5% are for women? Puerto Banús supports women’s sport to achieve equality in the sector

To help promote and enhance equality in sport, Puerto Banús is an official partner of the ‘Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España 2021’ women’s golf tournament, which counts towards the official ranking for the Ladies European Tour, which serves to decide who is the best female golfer of the year.

One of Puerto Banús’ primary commitments to society is to promote gender equality in all areas. For this reason, the marina was one of the main sponsors of the Spanish Women’s Open: Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España 2021, in which Carlota Ciganda, a golfer from Pamplona, won the title.

Indeed, it was Ciganda who made the honorary start at Puerto Banús on November 24, 2021, in a ceremony that had a remarkable social impact thanks to the participation of “Make-A-Wish Spain, a charity that collaborates with the tournament and is dedicated to helping sick children and their families, generating resilience by realising their dreams.

The Honorary Start held at Puerto Banús consisted of a fun challenge to reach a floating green using biodegradable balls that disintegrate in contact with water and become fish food. This helped to raise funds and make the dreams of children who are seriously ill come true.

This ceremony also included a visit to Puerto Banús by Gerard Pera, the première Spanish long-drive specialist and ambassador for Make-A-Wish Spain, who offered a spectacular long-drive display in the marina.

This Women’s Golf Open was held at Los Naranjos Golf Club during the month of November 2021 and is part of the programme for the Solheim Cup 2023, an event declared an Event of Exceptional Public Interest (AEIP). This ‘Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España’ is the last event on the calendar of the Ladies European Tour.

Puerto Banús has among its guiding principles the mission to support initiatives aimed at promoting diversity, decent work, quality training and the empowerment of women in various fields, including sports. This is why we have joined the family of sponsors of the Andalucía Costa del Sol Open de España and the Solheim Cup 2023, where our firm commitment to promote and enhance equality through sport, as well as to raise the profile of female talent in this sector, is made clear.
