In Puerto Banús, we are committed to reducing CO2 with the use of bicycles and electric vehicles

Did you know that since Spring of 2019, Puerto Banús has stopped emitting 16.11 tons of CO2 into the atmosphere due to the use of electric motorcycles inside the marina?

Since a year ago, in Puerto Banús we have been incorporating electric scooters and manual bicycles to facilitate the mobility of our workers within our facilities. The use of these means of mobility has reduced our CO2 emissions by up to more than 16 tons.

With the intention of reducing our carbon dioxide (CO2) and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as much as possible, in Puerto Banús we have incorporated a fleet of electric motor vehicles for mobility into our surveillance and security team of the hand of the  Prosegur company, and also manual urban bicycles for our seamanship equipment and cleaning and maintenance services.

Since the commitment to this sustainable mobility, in the spring of 2019, these trips that are made daily inside our port area by a substantial number of workers have been counted, giving a total of 107,433 kilometers of trips, which represents 16.11 tons of CO2 that we have stopped emitting into the atmosphere.

Only in 2020, within our streets, docks, and piers, our team has made a total of 63,145 clean kilometers of displacement, which represents 9.46 tons less CO2 emissions into the atmosphere, 17.62% more of the 6.65 tons that we stopped emitting in 2019.

Our goal as a marine aimed at sustainability by 2021, and as part of our Implementation Plan and Compliance with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) suggested by the UN, is to detect and eliminate unnecessary movements with combustion engine vehicles inside the enclosure, and expand the use of these electric motorcycles and manual bicycles in order to minimize the carbon footprint that Puerto Banús could leave with the development of its activities and daily services.

Following this SDG Compliance Plan, with this action to reduce our CO2 emissions as much as possible, Puerto Banús is directly influencing SDG 3 (Health and Well-being), SDG 7 (Affordable and Non-Pollutant Energy), and SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities), SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 17 (Partnerships to achieve the Goals).

This also directly impacts reducing pollution, one of the main efforts that Puerto Banús wants to focus on within this SDG Implementation and Compliance Plan, which the protection of the oceans, biodiversity, and responsible consumption.

In this way, reducing CO2 and greenhouse gas emissions has become a commitment of Puerto Banús that joins the guidelines set by the European Commission last September, when it presented its plan to reduce emissions of these gases (-55% by 2030, compared to 1990 levels).

Puerto Banús has taken up this call and warning from Europe to contribute in measures of our possibilities, to the achievement of this goals and leadership that the European Union wants to exercise worldwide; and because of our projection as an international port and a benchmark in the port and nautical sector, we must be obliged to commit to this policy of reducing CO2 emissions in our processes as a marina and as a company.
