Installation of marine biodiversity regeneration structures in collaboration with Ocean Ecostructures

Puerto Banús has installed systems in areas within the harbour that allow the regeneration of marine biodiversity, in a collaboration with Ocean Ecostructures. As such, Puerto Banús becomes the first Andalusian port to use this innovative technology, which allows the revitalisation and recycling of marine infrastructure and damaged environments, restoring life and reinforcing the fight against climate change with the recovery of the marine environment.

In this first phase, a total of 10 calcium carbonate marine regeneration structures have been installed, engineered by a Catalan company, and which have already given optimal results in six other national port facilities.

The LBU (Life Boosting Units) structures are highly versatile natural calcium carbonate composite plates which allow degraded spaces in marine environments to begin to renaturalize and reforest in a short period of time.

The state-of-the-art technology structures consist of an exclusive multi-layer design with an area for attracting larvae and microscopic life and a fish nursery space, an area where some species can recover if they are in a delicate state. The structures are specifically designed to regenerate, above all, the native species of the area, allowing all the microorganisms floating in the water to adhere to it.

Thus, in November 2022, a total of 10 LBU structures distributed in different areas of the harbour have been installed, previously analysed by the Ocean Ecostructures scientific team for their optimal development and regeneration of marine biodiversity in the marine enclave.
