III <\/span>Ocean<\/span> Ecostructures<\/span> Monitoring<\/span> Report<\/span><\/h2>\n

Ocean<\/span> Ecostructures<\/span> has <\/span>carried<\/span> out<\/span> the<\/span> III <\/span>report<\/span> that<\/span> collects<\/span> the<\/span> data <\/span>found<\/span> in <\/span>the<\/span> last<\/span> monitoring<\/span> on<\/span> October<\/span> 17 and <\/span>contrasts<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> monitoring<\/span> on<\/span> May 23, 2023. <\/span>Although<\/span> a <\/span>decrease<\/span> in <\/span>biodiversity<\/span> has <\/span>been<\/span> observed<\/span> with<\/span> respect<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> previous<\/span> sampling<\/span>, <\/span>this<\/span> is<\/span> due<\/span> to<\/span> the<\/span> seasonal<\/span> variation<\/span> itself<\/span> and <\/span>agrees<\/span> with<\/span> the<\/span> results<\/span> obtained<\/span> in <\/span>other<\/span> ports<\/span> along<\/span> the<\/span> Spanish<\/span> coast<\/span>. <\/span>We<\/span> are <\/span>waiting<\/span> to<\/span> see<\/span> how<\/span> it<\/span> continues <\/span>to<\/span> evolve<\/span> in <\/span>winter<\/span> and <\/span>next<\/span> spring<\/span>, <\/span>when<\/span> we<\/span> predict<\/span> that<\/span> there<\/span> will<\/span> once <\/span>again<\/span> be <\/span>an<\/span> increase<\/span> in <\/span>species<\/span> richness<\/span> and <\/span>biomass<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

In <\/span>November<\/span> 2022, 10 <\/span>Life<\/span> Boosting<\/span> Units<\/span> structures<\/span> were<\/span> installed<\/span> in <\/span>C\u00edvitas<\/span> Puerto Ban\u00fas, in <\/span>collaboration<\/span> with<\/span> Ocean<\/span> Ecostructures<\/span>, in <\/span>different<\/span> areas<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> port<\/span> that<\/span> allow<\/span> the<\/span> regeneration<\/span> of<\/span> marine <\/span>biodiversity<\/span>, <\/span>restoring<\/span> life<\/span> and <\/span>allowing<\/span> the<\/span> revitalization<\/span> and <\/span>recycling<\/span> of<\/span> marine <\/span>infrastructure<\/span> and damaged <\/span><\/span>environments<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

III <\/span>Report<\/span> Highlights<\/span><\/h3>\n

The overall objective of the study is to monitor the colonization and subsequent ecological succession in the \u201cLife Boosting Units\u201d (LBU) regeneration structures installed in Puerto Jos\u00e9 Ban\u00fas in November 2022. Throughout the monitoring period, the the success of species recruitment, as well as the differences between the observed communities, in the LBU according to the installation area.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This report reflects the results obtained after the first 11 months have elapsed since the introduction of LBUs in the environment. The structures studied (ten in total) were installed in the 3 locations of the port represented in Image 1. The information on the number of units in each area is collected in <\/span>Table 1<\/span><\/b>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Results and general condition of the LBU regeneration units<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The communities grown in the LBU have shown an increase in terms of accumulated biomass and coverage (<\/span>Image 2<\/span><\/b>), also increasing the complexity of the established ecological assemblages.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The most common species found in association with the units are the red algae of the order <\/span>Ceramiales <\/span><\/i>and the ascidian <\/span>Clavelina lepadiformis<\/span><\/i>. In the sampling carried out in May, a greater abundance of some fish was observed, such as <\/span>Chromis chromis<\/span><\/i> or several species of the genus <\/span>Diplodus<\/span><\/i>, but in the sampling carried out in October, a decrease in these mobile species and an increase in benthic species such as the hydrozoan<\/span> Eudendrium<\/span><\/i> racemosum was observed and the polychaetes of the genus <\/span>Filograna<\/span><\/i>.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

General biodiversity in the structures in Puerto Ban\u00fas<\/span><\/b>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The evolution of biodiversity in the global environment of the port is shown in F<\/span>igure 1<\/span><\/b>, where, despite the decrease in October, the upward trend in specific biodiversity can be observed. Already in the first sampling (carried out on March 7, 4 months after the installation of the units) the LBU showed approximately 51% more biodiversity than the wall. Then, during the May sampling, the biodiversity of the LBUs was 73% higher than the wall (56 species in the LBUs and 15 on the wall). Finally, during October, the LBUs have presented 53% more biodiversity than the walls (38 species in the units and 18 on the wall).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The present results indicate that the operation of the units is optimal:<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
