In <\/span>November<\/span> 2022, <\/span>C\u00edvitas<\/span> Puerto Ban\u00fas, in <\/span>collaboration<\/span> with<\/span> Ocean<\/span> Ecostructures<\/span>, <\/span>installed<\/span> 10 <\/span>Life<\/span> Boosting<\/span> Units<\/span> structures<\/span> in <\/span>different<\/span> areas<\/span> of<\/span> the<\/span> port<\/span> that<\/span> allow<\/span> the<\/span> regeneration<\/span> of<\/span> marine <\/span>biodiversity<\/span>, <\/span>restoring<\/span> life<\/span> and <\/span>allowing<\/span> marine <\/span>infrastructure<\/span> and <\/span>damaged<\/span> environments<\/span> to<\/span> be <\/span>revitalized<\/span> and <\/span>recycled<\/span>.<\/span> <\/strong><\/p>\n

After 10 <\/span>months<\/span>, <\/span>another<\/span> monitoring<\/span> has <\/span>been<\/span> carried<\/span> out<\/span> on<\/span> the<\/span> Life<\/span> Boosting<\/span> Units<\/span> (LBU) <\/span>structures<\/span> that<\/span> were<\/span> installed<\/span> in <\/span>November<\/span><\/a> 2022 at <\/span>key<\/span> points<\/span> within<\/span> the<\/span> marina. <\/span>During<\/span> the<\/span> inspection<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> Ocean<\/span> Ecostructures<\/span> scientific<\/span> team<\/span> has <\/span>identified<\/span> the<\/span> species<\/span> present<\/span> at <\/span>each<\/span> point<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

Over<\/span> the<\/span> past<\/span> six<\/span> months<\/span>, <\/span>the<\/span> communities<\/span> have<\/span> been<\/span> evolving<\/span> towards<\/span> more <\/span>developed<\/span> stages<\/span>. <\/span>The<\/span> LBUs<\/span> have<\/span> been<\/span> completely<\/span> colonized<\/span> by<\/span> a <\/span>large<\/span> number<\/span> of<\/span> groups<\/span> of<\/span> organisms<\/span>. Up <\/span>to<\/span> 56 <\/span>different<\/span> species<\/span> have<\/span> been<\/span> reported<\/span> growing<\/span> or<\/span> interacting<\/span> with<\/span> LBU <\/span>structures<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n

In the case of mobile organisms, interaction has been considered if their position was less than 0.5m from the structures. The reported figure represents an increase of practically double the number of species compared to the values collected in March (34 species).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The figures observed at the end of May 2023 have doubled in just 3 months, since the previous sampling, in March. This growth is much more evident in Zones 2 and 3, where the dry weight of each LBU reaches 1.8kg\/LBU and 1.2kg\/LBU, respectively.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What<\/span> new <\/span>species<\/span> have<\/span> been<\/span> observed<\/span>?<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

Among the species found, the presence of organisms such as cuttlefish (Sepia officinalis) can be highlighted, of which eggs were found in several LBUs in Zone 1 and 3 (Image 3H). At the same time, clutches as well as adult specimens of the snail Stramonita haemastoma have also been detected in Zone 3 (Image 3F-G). These findings are relevant since they show that LBU structures have a positive influence on the life cycle of marine species in Civitas Puerto Ban\u00fas.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The presence and diversity of ichthyofauna (fish) has also increased. Species of blenny fish (Parablennius sp.) have appeared in very abundance in most structures (Image 3A). Bream species such as Diplodus sargus or Diplodus cervinus cervinus with large sizes have also been recorded (Image 3D-E).<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In March, a notable presence of the invasive algae Rugulopteryx okamurae was reported. Although this species was also detected in the May sampling, its abundance has decreased in the port as a whole. Its presence in the LBU has been observed in Zones 1 and 2 (Image 3C)<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
